I found something strange in the garden — small, round, white balls. I was horrified when I realized what they were.

One morning, while watering your plants, you notice small white spheres scattered in the soil. They gleam softly in the sunlight, round, smooth, almost perfect. Beads fallen from a necklace? Fertilizer granules? Or… something else entirely? This kind of discovery is intriguing, sometimes even worrying. What if these “beads” held a secret known only to nature?

When the earth hides its mysteries from us

It's often by gently scratching the surface of the soil that we discover these strange white balls. Their texture is soft, slightly gelatinous, and their arrangement seems too orderly to be random. Yet, they are neither decorative beads nor forgotten plastic: they are, in fact,  snail eggs . Yes, these discreet little creatures, often seen after the rain, leave veritable pearly little treasures in our flowerbeds.

Snail eggs: pretty but a nightmare for the vegetable garden

As cute as they look, these eggs are the beginning of a silent army. Each snail can lay up to a hundred eggs several times a year. In just a few weeks, these little pearls transform into hungry snails capable of devouring your young shoots, salads, or strawberries. Their appetite is formidable!

But don't panic: it's all about observation and prevention. If you spot these small translucent spheres, it's best to act quickly before they hatch.

How to recognize and eliminate snail eggs

Snail eggs are easy to identify:

  • Size  : between 2 and 4 mm in diameter, perfectly round.
  • Colour  : pearly white or slightly pinkish.
  • Texture  : soft, slightly gelatinous to the touch.
  • Location  : under a few centimeters of soil, in damp and sheltered areas.

To get rid of them without damaging your soil, there's no need for chemicals. Gently scoop them out with a small shovel or gloves, then throw them into warm compost or a bucket of soapy water. Avoid leaving them in the garden: snails would find it an ideal breeding ground.

Preventing the appearance of new egg-laying

Snails love damp, dark, and heavily vegetated spots. To prevent them from turning your vegetable garden into a nursery:

  • Ventilate the soil regularly to disturb their hiding places.
  • Avoid watering in the evening, especially in summer: nighttime humidity attracts them.
  • Place crushed eggshells around fragile plants: snails do not like to crawl on sharp surfaces.
  • Clean up the areas around the garden, where they love to take refuge under overturned boards or pots.

A little regular maintenance is enough to keep the garden healthy, without disturbing its natural balance.
