Seeing a green dot on your Android phone? Here’s what it means.

The green dot in the upper-right corner of your Android phone might seem confusing, but don’t worry. We’re here to explain what it is and what it means.

Like its competitor, the iPhone, Samsung has designed Android phones with several important alert icons. Some are more intuitive than others, but one that users often ask about is the green dot in the upper-right corner. While users know it indicates something is happening, they don’t always know what function it’s associated with.

Samsung says it added this feature to help users feel more in control of their privacy settings. Once you understand what it means, you’ll know if you need to check your phone’s privacy and permissions settings.

What does the green dot mean?

Unlike iPhones, which have both green and orange dots to distinguish functions, Android phones use a single icon for all of them. If you see a green dot, it means one of the currently open apps is using the device’s microphone or camera. While this isn’t a problem if you’re actively using the camera, it can be annoying if you forget to grant camera or microphone access to all open apps.

What to do if you see a green dot?

According to Samsung, you can quickly find out which app is using the camera or microphone in four simple steps. When a notification appears, an icon will appear indicating whether the alert is for the camera, microphone, or both. The icon will then shrink to a dot in the upper-right corner, next to

other active indicators.

To learn more, swipe down on the notification bar to open it and tap the dot to expand it. A dialog box will open showing you what you’re using (camera, microphone, or both) and which app is using them. If you allow the app’s access, you don’t need to take any further action.

However, if you don’t remember granting access to a particular app, go to Settings and disable those permissions. If the notification shows an app you no longer use, consider removing it from your device for peace of mind.
