Often silent at first, hyperglycemia can set in without any apparent signs and harm your health in the long term. However, in France as elsewhere, our current diet, rich in sugars and processed foods, exposes many people to this imbalance.
The good news? Our body sends signals. But we still need to recognize them. Here are 16 warning signs to watch for to better understand your blood sugar levels and maintain your well-being.
Need to urinate more often
One of the first signs: you’re going to the bathroom frequently, even at night. This is your body’s way of eliminating excess sugar. Unusual frequency, especially without having had much to drink, should be a warning sign.
Is your vision blurry for no reason? High blood sugar can change the shape of the lens and affect vision. If this happens regularly, talk to your doctor.
Difficulty concentrating
A brain that lacks fuel (glucose misused) functions in slow motion. The result: concentration problems, mental fatigue and a feeling of being “in the fog” .
Dry mouth
A dry mouth, often accompanied by intense thirst, may indicate that your body is losing too much fluid due to the elimination of sugar through urine.
Erectile dysfunction (in men)
Over the long term, excess sugar can damage the blood vessels and nerves responsible for erections. This is a sign that should not be underestimated.
Frequent infections
High blood sugar weakens the immune system, promoting urinary tract, skin, and recurring infections. If you’re getting sick often, this is a warning sign to listen to.
Slow-healing wounds
Is your injury taking longer to heal? This may be related to poor blood circulation, which is typical in people with high blood sugar.
Digestive disorders
Bloating, abdominal pain, or nausea can occur when the stomach empties more slowly due to excess sugar in the blood.
Chronic fatigue
Despite resting, do you still feel exhausted? Your body has difficulty using the energy contained in food, which can lead to extreme fatigue.
Excessive thirst
If you feel thirsty all the time, it may be because your kidneys are working harder to filter sugar. This fluid loss causes you to drink more, without feeling full.
Dry and itchy skin
