You've seen them hundreds of times, but you don't know what the strips on towels are for.

Look at your bath towel – do you see that woven stripe at the end? Most people think of it as decoration or simply don’t notice it. In fact, it’s probably the most important part of the entire towel.

What is it called and what does it do?

This strip is called a dobby border and is woven 5 to 10 centimeters from the edge of the towel. Textile experts consider it a key element in the durability of the towel – not just its appearance.

Here's what it actually does:

Prevents unraveling – interrupts the continuous structure of the fabric and stabilizes the fibers during wear.

Retains shape – acts as a reinforcing tape that prevents the towel from deforming after repeated washings

Makes folding easier – the slightly stiffer strip allows for even and precise folding for tidy storage

Prevents odors – dries faster than other fabrics, reducing the risk of moisture and odor

Decoration or quality?

Some borders match the towel and are barely noticeable, while others have patterns or contrasting fabric for a more elegant, “hotel” look. Manufacturers of cheap towels often skimp on this band first – or make it so thin that it doesn’t serve its purpose.

Over time, a well-made border prevents curling corners and frayed threads – two of the most common reasons to throw away a towel that is otherwise still absorbent.

How to choose a quality towel

Next time you buy a towel, check this strip before anything else:

Is the curb fabric thick?

Is it sewn well – without loose threads or unevenness?

Is it smooth to the touch – without any roughness or hard edges?

If the answer is "yes" to all three questions, you are almost certainly holding a quality product in your hands. The small detail that you have overlooked for years turns out to be the most reliable indicator of quality.
